Hi faithful supporters of Teresa!
I have just returned home after attending the publicity concert at Toa Payoh HDB Hub. Below is my report on the Teresa's performance at the above-mentioned event:
She was the first of the four to perform and she sang two songs, of which I could only remember the first song being Ci Niao from F.I.R. The second song's title was obscured by the poor quality of the mikes and broadcast system at the event (which had almost drowned out poor Mi Lu Bing's two songs onstage). I feel that both songs had too many interludes which prevented any spell-bounding effects on the audience.
Teresa was dressed in a black and white sports jacket, a black short skirt and black stockings. In my opinion, the black stockings are a little bit too extra because the overall black effect on Teresa's clothing was a little overkill, especially when the concert atmosphere defied the black-and-white classy feel. Perhaps Teresa should dress down a little. More colours will add life and vibrancy to your stage presence.
The first song sung by Teresa was pretty impressive because despite the poor mike quality (which sounded quite muffled), Teresa's voice and skilful deliverance of the song managed to overcome the technicality and earned the respect of many who were present (there were some genuinely-inspired cheers in the middle of her song). However, she was a little too rigid in her stage presentation, and moved too little to interact or dance to the song.
The second song was quite unfamiliar to me and to many of the audience and that selection sort of deflated her overall performance because audience recognition of the song she sung was low and hence the consequent poor audience response and applause.
Teresa, if you remembered one of my earlier advisory posts to you during the second half of the Campus Superstar competition, I mentioned Total Entertainment Value (TEV) before you sang Love Love Love successfully in the competition. If you had forgotten, here's a gentle recap:
Total Entertainment Value (Singing capability + Song Delivery + Stage Attire + Stage Delivery + Audience Interaction)
I must say you did well enough for the first song by F.I.R because you managed to bring out the song flavour with your song deliverance (you earned my nod of approval since I see your effort). However, for your next performance, I hope you can take into consideration the composition of the audience (who may not appreciate F.I.R songs due to varying age groups present) and the general atmosphere of the event (in this case, it is more of public relations and public enjoyment, and such a difficult song would dull the senses of the audience who would have been tired of standing and waiting and was hoping for more entertaining songs). Note also that the acoustics of the HDB Hub Atrium is not that good due to the open spaces near the roof.
The second song, in my humble opinion, really lacked the TEV because most of the audience are quite unfamiliar with the song and thus did not want to applaud your efforts even though you sang it quite well. Take a leaf from Renfred, who sang a more famiiar song to get the mood going in the packed atrium just now.
I know you will be attending the AuditionSEA at PC Bunk (near Doby Ghaut MRT) on 2nd September 2006. I hope you can consider the audience composition on that day and select the appropriate songs to delight the audience.
I will be there at PC Bunk to see you perform as well and I hope your performance on that day will more satisfactory than your performance today. I hope you don't find me overly critical of your performance today because I just hope you can deliver your potential and continue to let everyone know that you have a voice and personality that can touch everyone's heart if you continually improve yourself. =)
My performance ratings on you and the other three CSS: Teresa: ***1/4 Geraldine: ***3/4 Renfred: **** Zhiyang: ****1/4
Let the audience recognize, enjoy your deliverance and presentation of the songs, and if they sway and groove to your songs, you know you've succeeded.
